The gothic word "spill", means a saying, story, or piece of news. The word for the narrative of God, gospel is derived from this. The second definition comes from the Anglo-Saxon word "spellian" meaning to recount, to write out something. The third meaning is related to the old English word "speld". A speld is a thin rod of wood used to point, such as a teacher would use. These rods were also called wands. The last definition describes a period of activity or work. A spell is giving time to recount something that spells out your desire. The wand focuses the energy that has been bound together. This is where the term "spellbinding" comes from. Find a nice fountain pen or quill pen to write your spells. Invest in some colored inks. You may also wish to draw a picture of your wishes and desires, or use photographs. Use your imagination. The image you eventually come up with may be ceremonially burned or buried as an offering, or kept in a sacred place. Properties of different Colors of Ink Blue : Healing, Mental Powers, Communication, Messages of Protection Red : Sex, Courage, Energy Black : Banishing Rituals Green : Prosperity, Abundance, Fertility Spell definitions from Notions and Potions by Susan Bowes A Few Words of Caution Never create a spell that could possibly harm you or someone else. Never create a spell to exploit someone's free will. Remember the Threefold Law, anything sent out returns three times stronger. Do not work in a foreign language unless you are fluent in that language. Mispronunciation, tone and inflections of words are important. If you intend to use a spell written by another and it does not feel right, do not use it. Beware of claims of spells that are guaranteed, nothing works for everyone. 1. Cookies and juice good substitute c. Feast! 6. Purification of Self The purification of self is a way to remove the accumulation of all negative things that happened during the day and to prepare for the work to come. Before ritual work, you have to change your frame of mind from the everyday mundane world. Here are a couple of ways to to do this: Incense You may use incense in the common stick form or in what is called a smudge stick. This is a small bundle of incense. The incense is lit and is passed around the body, but not too close to the hair(fire hazard). As you pass the incense around your body, concentrate on the smoke passing through you. Invision all the negativity and the excess baggage of the day leaving you as the smoke rises around you. When you feel cleansed, put out the incense. You will need a container to put out the smudge stick. A terra cotta saucer filled with sand is ideal. Ritual Baths A ritual bath is a great way to shed the day and concentrate on the ritual to come. Supplies include white candles, for Spirituality and Higher Self, SaltHerb or Herbs for Purification, Candle Snuffer. Run a bath of very warm water. As the water is running light the white candles. Use as many as you wish. Three is an appropriate number as it represents the three aspects of the Goddess. As you light a candle think or recite aloud: "I light this candle in truth and peace". Repeat with each candle. While the water is running, add a small amount of salt into the water, then add the the herb or herbs of your choice.Step into the water and slowly sink down into the tub. Relax and feel the water covering your body. Let the day and all negativity be drawn into the water. Concentrate on letting go and moving to the positive. Wash slowly. Turn the bath into its own ritual. Think or say aloud : " All negativity is flowing out of me into the water. I am pure for the work to come". Take as long as you need. When you feel you are clear and relaxed step out of the tub and drain the water. Watch the water flow down the drain. Envision all the negativity and the day behind you flowing down the drain with the water. Dry yourself slowly, deliberately. As you snuff out the candles, think or say aloud: "I leave this bath in truth and peace". You are now ready for the ritual to come. Herbs for Purification According to Scott Cunningham: Anise Frankincense Lovage Rosemary Bay Hyssop Myrrh Rue Bay Laural Lavender Orange Saffron Daragonsblood Lemon Peppermint Sandalwood Elder Lemon Verbena Pine Soloman's Seal 7. Ritual for Self-Initiation Physical initiation is not absolutly necessary. It is a statement made in the form of a ritual. Before performing this ritual, use should have studied and have some basic ritual experience. The traditional study period is a year and a day. This way you follow one compleat circle of the seasons. The self-initiation ritual symbolizes the death of a non-Wiccan and the birth of a Wiccan. Supplies (in addition to supplies for casting circle)White candle for Goddess Red, Yellow or Gold candle for God White candle to represent Spirituality and Higher Self Altar space Incense*and CenserPentacle (optional) Black shawl or cloth Purify your self using either incense or a ritual bath. Set up your altar Keep it simple for this ritual Cast your Circle, Call the Quarters Instead of the invokation in the circle casting ritual, you may wish to use the following. If you use the following, when you call the quarters, you may leave out the reference to the Lady and Lord. Use whichever is more comfortable to you, or make something else up. Wrap yourself in the black shawl or cloth. This is to represent the death of your old self. Invoke the Goddess. Light the Goddess candle on the altar and recite: "Goddess of the MoonGoddess of the Earth. Goddess of us All. Goddess of our Birth. In this time and in this place be with me now in sacred space".Invoke the GodLight the God candle and recite: "God of the Sun. God of the Earth. God of us All. God of our Birth. In this time and in this place. Be with me now in sacred space". Announce to Goddess and God of your intentions. GreyWing leaves the wording to you for this.It is a personal ritual and you should say what you feel, not what she writes. As you recite what you have chosen, light the second white candle and feel what you are speaking. Throw off the black cloth. Announce to the Lady and Lord your rebirth. Relax in the circle watch candle flame flicker and meditate on what you are to be. When you feel you are ready snuff out the white ritual candle and recite: "I am now and forever truly Wiccan. So mote it be". Thank Goddess and God then close circle. *For this ritual you may use frankincense, myrrh, benzion, sandlewood, cinnamon, rosemary, bay, vervain, or any combination you find pleasing. 8. Cleansing and Consecration of Tools You may wish to consecrate your tools, although it is not necessary, as the kitchen witch knows. Supplies in addition to Circle Casting Supplies : Any Tool You wish to consecrate White Candle for Consecration Flame Cast Your Circle To consecrate the tools, the Elementals may be used. Pick up the Wand saying : "I have chosen this Wand to assist me in my work." Visualize the Wand being cleared of any negativity, especially if it has had a previous owner. Continue till the wand feels clear to you. Now visualize positive energy flowing from you, down your arm and into the wand. Visualize a strong white light flowing through your body to the tool. Feel it absorb the positive energies. Touch it to the Penticle saying : "In the names of the Goddess and God, (use any names you wish), I bless and make sacred this Wand, tool of my Craft. I charge this Wand by the Element Earth." Point the Wand toward the North saying : "May the Powers of the Earth, cleanse and fill the Wand I have chosen." Pass the Wand through the smoke of the Incense saying : "In the names of the Goddess and God, (use any names you wish), I bless and make sacred this Wand, tool of my Craft. I charge this Wand by the Element Air." Point the Wand to the East saying : "May the Powers of the Air, cleanse and fill the Wand I have chosen." Pass the Wand through the Candle Flame saying : "In the names of the Goddess and God, (use any names you wish), I bless and make sacred this Wand, tool of my Craft. I charge this Wand by the Element Fire." Point the Wand to the South saying : "May the Powers of Fire, cleans and fill the Wand I have chosen." Sprinkle the Wand with Water saying : "In the names of the Goddess and God, (use any names you wish), I bless and make sacred this Wand, tool of my Craft. I charge this Wand by the Element Water." Point the Wand to the East saying : "May the Powers of Water, cleanse and fill the Wand I have chosen." "This Tool is now ready, being Consecrated and Charged, to assist me in my work. So mote it be!" Perform other workings if you wish, then Close the Circle To Consecrate, cleanse and Charge other Tools, subsitute the word "Wand" with the name of the tool chosen. 9.Full Moon Ritual 10. Ring the bell to signal the end of the ritual. Perform any cleansing of tools or spells you wish to perform at this time. If you cast a circle for this ritual, remember to close it when you are finished. 11. On The Writing Of Spells Even with the abundance of material available, you will not always find a prewritten spell to meet your needs. Always feel free to adapt any spell that appeals to you to fit your goal. Change wording, candles, herbs, runes, etc. to your satisfaction. What works for some may not work for you. We creatures of the earth are all different in our own ways, and we express ourselves differently. It is always best to write your own spells. You have more at stake than anyone else who might write the spell for you. Only you know exactly what your intention is. If the spell is written by you, your energy, your emotions, your essence, go into it. It may seem a daunting task at the beginning, but it is all within you now: power, magick. You just have to learn to express it to the Universe. The Process What is the goal of your spell? Know what it is you want to accomplish. Write down on a slip of paper what it is you are after. Choose how to word your goal carefully. Do not influence another or influence in a negative manner. Being precise is also important in the outcome of the spell. Decide how and when the spell is to be performed. Timing of the Moon, day, month. Choose symbols and/or props that correspond with the goal you have in mind. Candles in the appropriate colors, runes, beads, gems, herbs, salt, incense, music, etc. These are the components of your spell. Choose appropriate deities if you wish to work with them. You may have to do some research to find the correct ones to work with. Or, you may wish to work with the energy of the Universe. Here is where you decide if you will use candle magick, herbal, sympathetic or other form of magick. Will you use moon magick? Or combinations of these magicks? All of these things, either separate or together take everyday ideas and change them to the necessary magickal symbols to get you in the right frame of mind for spell working. You will be "setting the stage" for your spell. When you have your components, now is the time to put it all together. This is where you decide how the spell will be performed. In what order will you do things such as lighting candles, and what will you be doing with those candles? Will you memorize the spell, to be spoken or written at the time of the working, or will you have it written beforehand? If you have trouble with this step, find a spell with a structure you like and adapt that one to your needs. As to the writting of the spell itself, it does not have to rhyme, but it may be easier to remember that way. Take your time, this is an important step. Most mistakes are made here. But it is not as difficult as you imagine. Take the time to think of the wording of the spell, but do not think to hard and long. The best writing comes quickly, and when you least expect it. Have a pen and paper handy. On Performance Take the time to cleanse, bless and charge props and tools. This may be done in a separate ritual or just before the spell to be performed. Make sure you start fresh with each spell. This will release random and left-over energy from previous spells. Be physically prepared. Ground, center, meditate. Take a ritual bath if you wish. Your spell may be cast with or without a circle. All of this will take time, practice, and lots of research. Most of all, believe in yourself. Do not be afraid of what is inside you, but learn to release it. You may make mistakes at first, we all do, but be persistent. 12. Days and Corresponding Spellwork Each planet rules a specific day of the week. It is not absolutly necessary to follow this. This is for the optimum results. Sunday, Sun (Leo) The Sun's Day rules success, ambition, career, sport, healing Monday, Moon (Cancer) The Moon's Day rules psychic powers, clairvoyance, home, childbirth, feminine qualities Tuesday, Mars (Aries and Scorpio) Tiw's Day rules courage, men, sexual energy, war Wednesday, Mercury (Gemini and Virgo) Woden's Day rules communication, education, travel, mental agility, writing, acting Thursday, Jupiter (Sagittarius) Thor's Day rules expansion, wealth, political power, law, business, insurance matters Friday, Venus (Libra and Taurus) Freya's Day rules love, beauty, music, the arts, the environment Saturday, Saturn (Capricorn) Saturn's Day rules karma, property, inheritance, agriculture. 13. Spells of Love Warning! Spells of this type should not be manipulative. They should not be focused on one particular person. The effect is always stronger on the one who performs the spell than on the intended partner. If done this way they usually backfire, causing more harm than good. Love spells are meant to be used for two people who are already involved and wish to increase their feelings toward each other. If you are not curently involved you may wish to do a spell that releases its energy into the universe and ask for guidance in bringing a relationship your way. You need to be open to love or no spell can help.GreyWing has had many requests for love spells and hopes you are pleased with the following. She has consented to include both types of Love Spells in this Book. Timing of the Love Spells : For maximum effect of a love spell perform on Fridays, Moon in Aquarius or Pisces, Full Moon, Valentine's Day or May Day. Rose Petals to the Sea If you are lucky enough to live near the ocean, collect a few rose petals from a wild beach rose. If not a regular garden rose bush will do. Please do not collect rose petals from someones prize roses without asking permission! Visualize your ideal mate while you collect the petals.Take the petals to the shore or a river, any source of moving water. Water flowing away from you carries energy outward, and those that flow toward you draw love inward. If no river or or ocean is available, use a garden hose to make a miniture river. When you feel you have found the appropriate spot on the river or beside the ocean, or the home made stream, toss the petals into the water, saying, " As this rose moves out to sea, so true love will come to me". Again visualize your ideal mate while repeating the incantation. The water transports the magic. Adapted from Z.Budapest Love Candles Heat dried apple peels (or apple-scented oil) and 2 teaspoons of dried basil together with a cup of pink or red wax. When the wax is melted, remove the apple peels and pour the liquid into a heat resistant container you have chosen for a mold. For easy removal of the candle after the wax has hardened, make sure the top of the container is as wide or wider than the bottom. Before doing this, anchor a wick to the bottom of the container by putting a spot of hot wax on a penny or anything similar and attaching the wick to this using another spot of hot wax. Hold onto the wick as you pour the wax. Depending on the size of the candle, you may secure the top of the wick to a pencil and span the top of the container to keep the wick straight while the wax dries. When the wax has set remove the mold. Carve you candle with symbols of love.Burn the candle for two hours at a time during the full moon (for companionship). Visualize your desire and meditate. You may chant an incantation such as " Full Moon and Candle light the way. May love and joy find me and stay". Adapted from Patricia Telesco Candle Spell to Win a Loved One Begin this spell at the time of the Waxing Moon. Supplies: 2 Red Candles to Represent you and your loved one 2 White altar candles Candle Snuffer Sage Incense Open the Cirle Write your name with the thorn of a rose on one red candle, and the name of the intended one the other. If there is no specific person write something to the effect of "my love" and leave it open for the Goddess for the best. Light one of the alter candles reciting "Blessed be the Goddess, in love and light". Light the other alter candle and recite "Blessed be the God, in love and light". Light the sage incense in a fireproof container. Light the candle with your name carved in it and recite " Blessed be (your name)". Light the other candle and recite "Blessed be (partner's name)". When all four candles are lit take a few moments and refect on the intended. Recite "In the name if the Bright Spirit of Love, I and (name) will draw near to each other's souls and bodies as the two flames draw near each other". As you say this, move the two candles a little closer together. Visualize him/her coming closer toward you. Leave the two red candles burning and close the circle. Leave the candles burning for an hour then snuff them out. Repeat this spell during the three nights of the full moon. Each night, move the candles a little closer together. The last night, let the candles touch and burn down together. Do not leave candles burning unattended. When the candles have burned down, collect all the materials on the table, ashes from the incense, decorations you may have used such as flowers, and candle drippings. Put these in a paper bag and take to a moving body of water such as river or ocean. Say a few words to the water and toss the bag into it. This is not an environmentally friendly thing to do these days. Turn away and do not look back. Do not think about the spell you have just cast. Let go. Adapted from Z. Budapest Herbal Charm to Attract Love Fill a circle of rose or red colored cloth with any of the following : Acacia, rose, myrtle, jasmine or lavender petals, in combination or singly. Add to this a red felt heart and a copper coin or ring. As you fill the bundle with your chosen items, visualize the type of lover you are looking for. Tie the cloth with blue thread or ribbon, in seven knots. As you tie the knots you may chant an incantation such as " Seven knots I tie above, Seven knots for me and love". Spell definitions from Notions and Potions by Susan Bowes 14. Spells for Protection Negative energy is real. It is believed best to take preventative measures to stop negativity before it reaches you than to fight it off once it is there. Best Times to perform a protection spell are : Monday or Sunday Waxing to full Moon to establish protection. Waning Moon to banish evil Other Associations Are : Elements : All Planets : Moon, SunColors : Silver, White, blue, Metal : Silver, Plants : Basil, blood root, burdock, cinquefoil, feverfew, garlic, hyssop, High John the Conqueror root, laurel, motherwort, nettles (for binding), patchoule, purslane, rosemary, rowan (good against evil psychic forces), Solomon's Seal, St John's Wort, unicorn root, vervain (gathered with the left hand at the rise of the Dog Star, Sirius) Spell to Reflect Negativity Supplies MirrorWide-mouthed glass jar, Ashes, Vinegar, Knife or other carving tool, Apple. Perform this spell after sunset. Set the jar in front of the mirror. Place some ashes inside the jar and fill about 2/3 of the way with vinegar. Draw a representation of the negativity with the knife on the apple. While you are carving, feel the negativity drawn into the apple. Raise the apple above the jar and say :"Protection sought with apple and ash. Vinegar and salt, just a dash. Far away I send you, at this hour. May all your attempts to harm turn sour." Place the apple in the jar. A chemical reaction should take place. Visualize the negativity fizzle the way the contents of the jar fizzles. For best results, perform this spell for three consecutive nights. Adapted by GreyWing from Edain McCoy's "Witta" Spell to Protect Home and Possessions Supplies: Sage, Incense, Censer, Bell Perform this spell during a Waxing Moon. Put some sage in your incense burner (censer). Walk around your home with the censer. Circle your home three times (always clockwise), then in each room of the house. Pay special attention to doors and windows and let the the smoke filter into the crevices and openings. As you walk, recite a prayer you improvise, or write one ahead of time. Say or write what you feel. This has to come from deep inside you. It does not have to rhyme, nor be a great piece of literature. An example would be : "I invoke the Goddess of Protection, I invoke my ancestor's spirits. Three times around, three times about The world within, the world without. In home and possessions, may good spirits abound Evil and problems will not stay around." Ring the bell each time a circle is completed. When you are finished inside and out, place the incense in the door. Open all doors for a few minutes and let the smoke drift through your home, washing it clean. You can also purify your friends. Walk around your friends three times (clockwise) and fan the smoke over them. Repeat as you circle : "I invoke the Goddess of Protection, I invoke my ancestor's spirits. Three times around, three times about. In friends or family, may good spirits abound. Evil and problems will not stay around." GreyWing Fire Protection Spell Find a clear spot outside, at least twenty feet in diameter. Gather plenty of wood, matches, and a quantity of water. Using one of the sticks of wood, draw a circle about 11 feet in diameter. Use a compass, the Moon, Sun or stars to determine the directions. Lay a small fire (but do not yet light it) at each point just inside the circle for North, East, South and West. Make sure you have enough wood to keep the fires burning at least 1/2 hour. Walk to the South first, light the fire, with these words : "With the lighting of this fire, nothing from the South can harm me!" Move to the West and say : "With the lighting of this fire, nothing from the West can harm me!" Move North and say :"With the lighting of this fire, nothing from the North can harm me!" Lastly, in the East say :"With the lighting of this fire, nothing from the East can harm me!" Grab a burning stick form the Southern fire and thrust it at the sky and say : "With this flame, I am protected. Nothing from above can harm me." Throw the branch to the ground and say: "With this flame, I am protected. Nothing from below can harm me!" Pick up the burning branch and replace it in the Southern Fire. Sit in the center of the circle. Watch the flame consume the wood. Know anything that may harm you, on any level, is being burned away. Feel the heat, see the light from the flames. Know you will be protected. When the fires start to die down, you will feel the power ebbing. Bury the fires and douse with water. Erase the circle you have drawn on the earth.Leave the area. Keep the image of the protective flames in your mind. Recall this image when you feel the need for physical, spiritual, or mental protection. Adapted by GreyWing from Scott Cunningham's "Earth Power" Herbal Charm for Protection Cut a circle out of a piece of blue cloth. Fill the center of the cloth with 9 protective herbs. As you add the herbs recite : "For protection I fill this circle of blue,For protection I use the herbs that I do." Tie the bundle with white or silver thread. Carry this charm with you when you feel the need. You may make the tie long enough to put around your neck, keep the bundle in a pocket. GreyWing A Protection Bottle (Also known as Witch bottles) Pour fresh, clean sand into a long small bottle. Fill it to the top and cap it. Place the bottle near a window. This will guard against evil entering your home.In the past, the earth was thought to confuse evil spirits. They had to count every grain in the bottle before they could enter the home.Today evil spirits are seen as negativity that is around us all. The earth bottle is said to be useful in blocking such negativity from entering your home. From Scott Cunningham's "Earth Power" The bottle may be filled with things other than sand. Use items that symbolize protection such as broken glass, rosemary or other protective herbs, salt, ashes, vinegar, pins, alcohol, oak twigs, needles, nails, saliva, and blood. All of these have been used for protection at some point. As you place each item in the bottle imagine how that particular item will attack and destroy negativity. For example, visualize the broken glass cutting it. When the jar is full, bury it outside your front door. Visualize the bottle stopping the negativity. Draw a banishing pentagram on the ground above it. From Edain McCoy's "Witta"
